Car Care Tips for Long Drives

road trip

If a long drive is in your summer plans make sure your car is ready for the journey. Use these road trip prep tips to get you and your vehicle in shape before getting in gear.

Road Trip Prep Tips

Athletes prep for the big game, students prep for the big test, so it’s only right that cars prep for a big trip. Not only will you help ensure the vehicle is up for the journey, but you can save yourself maintenance surprises along the way. Here’s what you want to check before hitting the road:

  • Fluids. Top off essentials such as engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Get an oil change if it’s due any time over the course of your trip.
  • Tires. Check pressure for proper inflation and tread depth for traction. Consider getting tires rotated before you leave.
  • Battery. Test to make sure it’s in good condition.
  • Lights. Verify that headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are all working properly.
  • Wipers. Replace worn or cracked windshield wipers.
  • Filters. Check if engine and cabin air filters are due for replacement.
  • Brakes. Inspect for wear and tear.
  • Air Conditioning. Test for proper functionality.
  • Wash. Thoroughly clean your car inside and out before and after a long trip. Starting in a clean car kicks things off on a fresh, safe note. Pay close attention to windows and mirrors for improved visibility. Then, when you get home you’ll want to wash off all the dirt and grime collected along the way, especially if you went off-roading.

Make a pit stop at SPA Car Wash before and after your trip to get your car cleaned up and road ready.

Getting Yourself Ready for the Ride

In addition to getting your car ready, make sure you’re ready as well. Pack an emergency roadside kit with essentials including:

  • first-aid kit
  • jumper cables
  • spare tire and jack
  • flashlight
  • blanket
  • extra water and snacks

Plan your route in advance and check for any potential detours or hazardous weather conditions while away. Take regular breaks to avoid fatigue and enjoy the journey!
