10 Winter Car Care Tips
Start the New Year in a Like-New Vehicle
The start of a new year is a great time to establish goals. Whether you want to get in shape or try a new look, now is the time to make a plan. If you plan on going anywhere in your car, it’s also a great time to get it in shape—especially for winter weather. Here are 10 winter car care tips to help ensure your vehicle achieves its goals for a smooth drive and maintaining a pristine appearance.
Vehicle Winterizing Checklist
Your car has certain resolutions, such as getting you from point A to B in style and comfort. Here are some key winterizing tasks to help ensure it fulfills these goals.
- Check and replace fluids. Pay close attention to your antifreeze levels. Consider switching to a winter-grade oil and washer-fluid that’s less likely to freeze.
- Inspect the battery. Cold temperatures reduce battery efficiency, so make sure the voltage is where it needs to be. Consider a new battery if yours is already struggling or around five years old.
- Test tire traction and brakes. Check the tread depth to ensure there’s enough traction on slick roads. Consider swapping out snow tires if you live in an area that allows it. The cold can also reduce tire pressure, so keep an eye on recommended levels.
- Run heating systems. Before it gets too cold, check to make sure your car is warming up properly and both front and rear defrosters are working.
- Inspect belts, hoses, and wipers. Check components prone to wear, as they can become even more brittle in the cold. Some wiper designs are better suited to handle snow and ice. Replace anything that’s worn or cracked.
- Replenish emergency supplies. In addition to your everyday roadside kit—including jumper cables and flashlights—add the following items in case you get stuck somewhere in the cold: ice scraper, snow brush, blanket, warm clothing, snacks, sand or litter for traction.
- Wash regularly. Rinsing the salt off decreases build up, especially around the undercarriage where it can rust and corrode. Seal wheels to prevent salt damage.
- Protect the exterior. Remove any embedded contaminants and polish the surface before waxing. Apply wax or weather sealant to provide a barrier against salt and slushy grime. Using a ceramic coating adds even more paint protection.
- Condition the interior. Vacuum to remove salt, dirt, and debris. Use all-weather mats to catch salty slush that could damage carpets. Protect leather upholstery with a conditioner to prevent cracking in the cold, dry air.
- Treat windows, glass, and headlights. Clean these surfaces to a streak-free shine using a water-repelling product to maximize visibility. Restore cloudy headlights and use a sealant to prevent frosting.
Regularly washing and detailing your car during winter can help protect it from harsh conditions, making it easier for you to drive and maintain. By following these tips, you’ll not only treat your car to the care it deserves, but you’ll make sure it’s ready to face the challenges of winter driving safely.
